We found PJ McTavish Roofing through Checkbook.org. Communication was easy and prompt. Everything - returned calls, visit for estimate, emailing of estimate, actual repair - happened exactly when promised. Great workmanship at a reasonable price. Very happy to have found PJ McTavish.

Very professional. All the workers were very polite, and on time. Pat informed me step by step from when the materials where going to be delieverd to when they would be finished. Left the area around the house spotless. Would recommend to anyone.
— Nancy C., Laurel, MD
Excellent experience! The workers showed up promptly at 7:30 a.m., let us know they would be on the roof, and completed all the work in way less time than anticipated. Plus, they gave us the courtesy of letting me call later with credit card information for payment. The company rep showed up the day after I called to come over and look at the job and was completely straightforward about what would be entailed, including anticipated future issues with the roof. It’s rare to find contractors that are so responsive and honest. Price was less than half of what the outside estimate was. Since the guy who had our house built used substandard subcontractors for the roof installation, we likely will be dealing with these folks for years, and I’m actually glad. Recommended wholeheartedly.

Patrick runs a high quality business. Patrick was very professional and pleasant to work with. The week we scheduled to start, it rained continuously. Once the weather broke, he doubled up his crews to finish my house in 2 days. Patrick, his crews and Susan were a pleasure to work with. I trust and highly recommend PJ Mctavish & Co.

These folks are fantastic, I am a big gardener and have about 150 pots. Not a single plant was damaged with the job, these guys are extremely careful and efficient with their work. I couldn’t be more pleased with the work and professionalism this company has shown.
— Glenna Haynie, Washington, D.C.
This was an outstanding example of good-old honest quality customer service. He assessed that the problem we were having was not the roof, diagnosed the problem we did have, and offered to help us find another tradesperson to help us! Didn’t even charge a penny. You can be confident he will be the first person we turn to when we do need help with the roof. Very professional.
— Gary Krause, Burtonsville, MD
The quality of the work is EXCELLENT. The challenge is getting on their schedule because they are in such demand!
— Beverly Johnson, Washington, D.C.
PJ Mctavish installed my new roof. They removed my old metal room and replaced it with a new one. I live in a large duplex. He was excellent to work with. After the roof was installed, he came back out when I had a problem with squirrels nesting on the roof and sealed up the hole where they were getting in. He also followed up on a problem I was having with water for the air conditioning unit dripping on the roof. He didn’t charge me for either follow up visit.

PJ McTavish and Company Replaced metal sheeting on sloping expanse of a 72-year old slate roof with copper. Replaced broken and damaged slate. Installed new copper snow guards. Replaced a small amount of wood that had water damage. The work was excellent and I would definitely use them again. The company specializes in slate roofs. Each day Mr. McTavish took pictures of the work so we would not have to climb up on the roof to inspect it. He also took pictures of the damaged wood.
— Marion Barker, Bethesda, MD
Needed slate roof repair and gutter tightening. I called PJ and he answered quickly. He did an estimate within 2 days, called me to discuss the work, and had a contract e-mailed to me within a few days. The work was done about 3 weeks later. I was very satisfired.

Patrick Mctavish was the contractor picked from a group of 6 who provided estimates. He arrived on time for the estimate appointment and was friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. He listened to problems and concerns regarding the job and offered to break the job into portions to be completed at different times, making it financially feasible for the work to be done. Detailed estimates were provided within a week during the busy summer season. Photos were taken of the areas to be replaced and repaired. His office called ahead of time to schedual the installation of the scaffolding. When the work started, his employees were always prompt, courteous and professional. Aside from the work contracted, they did on-site fabrication of small missing pieces of the historic molding. They even took the time to assist me while I was painting the window trim on the house, by providing more platform boards for the scaffolding. They were also careful to let me know where they would be working so that no debris fell into the wet paint. The job site was completely cleaned up and the end of each workday and all tools and materials were secured. Their work was excellent. Just a fantastic crew of people! Patrick came and inspected the work upon completion and provided photos of the work. Great job done. He even left the scaffolding up until I finished painting, WOW!

I had a relatively small project- some repairs that my homeowners was requiring. Pat was the only one who could get to my house for a quote and to get the work done before my deadline. He was extremely responsive, and he even said he would come back periodically and check on the condition of the roof. Definitely recommend.

100 year old house, family property, needed flat roofs to replace original tin rear roof & front flat roof over the porches, and replace Shingle roof on main house. There was associated carpentry that is very important to do jointly with the roof work. The associated carpentry was done by Lofgren Construction and was thorough and work was outstanding. The cost estimate was accurate. We used TPO for the flat roofs. Several shingle options were provided. We chose Certainteed Landmark Pro 50 year warranty shingle, It was best for the style of the roof. Roofer & associated Carpentry Company advised there may be other needed work that is “Out of Scope” and would advise as they discovered the need. They did so. The autumn 2016 weather was good, and work was done promptly, with thorough clean up of the premises. Flashing was replaced, the Chimney and gutters were inspected, Replacement hangers for gutters were installed. only one of the existing gutters was found to be in need of being replaced.

Noted previous evening part is f a shingle in backyard. My husband went out on lower pitch roof and with binoculars was able to see 3-4 missing shingles and small hole. Concerned about forecast for afternoon rain and/ or for a small critter house hunting I called first thing this am 4/4/16. Spoke with Patrick and was surprised by how kind he was and patient while I told him the particulars. I ended up sending a few pics he asked for and within the hour he appeared in my driveway! Patrick went up on the roof and made estimate for ~ 550 - $650. He said two of his employees would be arriving shortly. Patrick returned with the two men who would do the job and also with shingles that were comparable in every way to mine but just a tiny little difference in the shade of the black. As not visible I requested to use what was available and kindly offered to me at a significant savings (over ordering the color match) for which I was most appreciative. The two men, Dave and Israel were very nice and expertly completed the repair under time and under original quote! Of Note| while Patrick was getting the ladder from his car, a neighbor approached him to come and look at his roof and he absolutely DID DO IT after my estimate was done! I am so pleased with the service, efficiency, concern and care for the customer and the overall friendly professionalism from everyone I encountered! I am going to pass the info along to our homeowners association so that others in our neighborhood can enjoy being taken care of in time of stress.

He was very responsive. I’m going to have him come out and give me an estimate to redo my whole roof. I called another company and they said they could get to me in three weeks. I called him and he came out the same day. It only took him less than an hour to do the repairs. He got up on the roof, identified what the problem was. There was a nail that was popping up through the shingles. He pounded it down and put some tar or something over it. That was it. He was really fast.

I used P. J. McTavish & Company to put on an entire new flat roof on my old house. He also re-contoured it and then did a mansard roof with new slate. He put in snow guards and did all kinds of work around the dormers. They also put in large, oversized gutters and a skylight. It was a huge job and was done superbly. There was nothing bad at all. He was absolutely good, honest and on time. His people were good and cleaned up after themselves. They put scaffolding up and were so conscientious. They were incredibly good and was fabulous. His pricing was competitive and they did quality work.

Outstanding service.

Extensive brickwork re-pointing, waterproofing, carpentry repair and masonry replacement on two chimneys and a brick porch with deck above. The first challenge was correctly diagnosing the source of attic and porch roof leaks through what appeared to be sound roofing and masonry. The second was coming up with a creative plan for solving the osmotic leaking without a big rebuilding project. Pat came up with some cost-effective and sound solutions for both problems. The work was executed perfectly.
— Sally Dian Rainey, Washington, D.C.
Pat McTavish has twice now been the first roofer to get back to me after a leaking roof emergency. He’s very responsive and honest. Doesn’t promise more than he can be sure will be fixed. He also tells you when it would be financially advantageous to wait for certain additional work. His workers are nice, knowledgeable men also. It’s hard to imagine doing better than with this company. He’ll go out of his way to help you out quickly when you’re really in a jam. Replaced leaking skylight, fixed shingles around it, cleaned gutters.
— Ellen Nunnelee, Washington, D.C.
I had a roof put on one of my homes and they also replaced the gutters. Around the chimney they found some damage and repaired this for me as well. I thought the prices were reasonable. I thought that they were very good and quick. They worked steadily and cleaned up as they went. This is the second time I have hired this company.
— Gloria MacKenzie, Colesville, MD
The diagnosis of the problem and the fix required 2 trips up onto the roof. The problem was fixed quickly. He would not let us pay him for such a small fix, and instead asked us to donate to a charity of his choice. We did that. Amazing in this day and age!
— Geoff Patton and Cheryl Kassed, Wheaton, MD
Excellent experience with Mr. McTavish and his workers. He was extremely responsive to my request for an estimate and in performing the repairs. Will definitely use the firm for any future roofing work.
— Michael Adams, Bethesda, MD
Excellent experience — came same day called to assess needed work and returned next morning to do work needed.
— Jane L Lawson, Silver Spring, MD
The price came in at about $100 below Pat’s estimate. Very pleased - especially that he spotted the problem with the gutter, which was causing dripping and mould on our stoop.
— Debra Measday, Burtonsville, MD
Pat gave a reasonable and fair estimate, and suggested work that needed to be done to make the job more professional. The crew arrived on time and finished within the promised time frames. The new roof looks great and professionally executed. I would definitely recommend this firm to others.
— Charles Heaps, Laurel, MD
Things went great. Pat was immediately responsive to my email, and was consistently good about following up on the phone at just about any hour, day or night. He was straightforward and honest about pricing and the considerations involved in this sort of repair. He was able to schedule things quickly, and when the time arrived, got his crew in and out in a minimum amount of time and came in under estimate. He and his crew were respectful of the inside of our house (which they had to go through to get up to the roof). He provided excellent follow-up, including pictures of the repair job. About 9 months later, when we had a small leak in the repair during an extremely strong storm, we were talking within 12 hours of my emailing him, and a small crack that had formed was repaired within a few days. I was consistently impressed with his honesty, good communication, professionalism, and punctuality. Although this was a smaller job, I’d definitely turn to him for a larger project.
— Benjamin Horwich, Washington, D.C.
It all seemed to be fine. They were prompt, responsive and were referred to me. Their pricing seemed to be reasonable although I did not get a ton of bids. I will use them again in the future.
— Shane Ottmann, Chevy Chase, MD
Pat is decent, honest, and goes above and beyond in every encounter we have had with him. He has helped us out on three issues and been amazing all three times. The most recent experience was a leak in the roof which we discovered during a heavy rainstorm on a Sunday night. I called him first thing Monday morning and he was on his way to check on the roof within the hour - I didn’t even need to be home and he was in the neighborhood. The roof was fixed the same day between other jobs he had. He came out twice on another matter that didn’t turn out to be a roofing issue and had sage advice about what we should do to solve it. Our initial problem was also solved quickly and well. I very highly recommend him.
— Jules Spector, Washington, D.C.
Mr. McTavish was kind enough to return my call nearly immediately after the phone service took my message. We needed a rough estimate for a roof replacement on a house we wanted to purchase. He was able to give me a quote quickly and talk me through any questions and concerns I had regarding the property. We did not purchase the house afterall but really appreciated his professional insight. Would call him again in the future.
— DONNA PETROCELLA, Chevy Chase, MD
They did roof repair and skylights. They are very good at diagnosing the problem and did a high quality work. They are pretty knowledgeable. They installed a roof skylight and repaired a leak on the roof.
— Theodore Lavine, Rockville, MD
The project took 4 days from start Mr. Mctavish was on site mostly all the time, will recomend this company worth the money specially with metal roof. Good work!!!
— Gasto Rivas, Washington, D.C.
The McTavish company redid the flashing around our chimney, and fixed up roofing tiles where they leaked. Mr. McTavish and his folks determined that the rest of my roof was still good. It went very well. First Mr. McTavish quoted one figure after looking at my roof while my wife was home. Then he came back on Sunday and I got on the roof with him. He quoted a lower figure. When the work was done, his time and materials paperwork showed a higher figure than even the first quote, but he stuck with the second quote. I really won’t know until next year when we get melting snow if the work he did fixed everything well, but it looks fine. I’m confident they did good work. Mr. M. said he might be more expensive than others, but said it’s because he doesn’t cut corners. I believe him.
